40mm Shingle Frequently Asked Questions

Shingles are a type of rock found near bodies of water that have an appealingly smooth texture, which is the result of natural weathering. In their typical state, shingles come in sizes from 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch (about the size of a pea), and in a range of natural colours like buff, rust brown, shades of grey, white, and translucent.
Roofing shingles are essentially shingles that have been ground down into a fine and gritty texture. Roofing shingles are known for their durability and ability to absorb and reflect moisture from the plywood that exists underneath them when placed on a roof. Roofing shingles also last for years.
To correctly lay out roofing shingles, begin at the bottom of the roof and place a tape measure ½ inch from the edge of the roof to ensure the shingles overhang the drip edge. Mark 12 inches up on the roof for the first course of shingles, then mark every 5 inches all the way up the roof to set your reveal.
To start installing shingles, line up the aluminum drip edge flush with the edge of the roof and make a pencil line at the top on each end of the house. Using the chalk line, snap a line between the two marks to get a straight edge. Be sure to pull the drip edge down about a half inch from that line to create a gap.
Pea shingle is a type of aggregate. These shingles are great in that they offset heat yet allow water infiltration, which is a great alternative to traditional types of paving. Pea shingle is also used for underground projects, such as drainage and pipe bedding. This makes it a practical material for large scale projects.
